Environmental Improvements

The DBI Ltd Board has prioritised the improvement of the environment and a rolling programme of works is ongoing. The area has been broken down into smaller neighbourhoods and each has been consulted on their top priorities and a package of measures has been put together.

The first phase concentrated on the CHOBB Tenants & Residents area of the retained Brackenhall properties which has seen the houses painted, new walls and metal fencing and plants made available to each household.  Now the works have been completed it has really encouraged people to take pride in their properties and feedback from residents has been very positive.  The area now includes a good mix of retained stock which complements the new build area.

Whitacre Close Residential Area

Detailed schemes for the Whitacre Close area have now been designed and costed and work has now commenced. This will include new walls, metal fencing, new house numbers and bin stores.

The Whitacre Close Play Area was completed in October 2009 and is now open for children in the area to use.  An official opening was held with children and Lawrence Batley Theatre (LBT) was held on 2nd December 2009.  More information and photos from the even can be seen here (coming soon).

Other Residential Areas

Costing and details of schemes for all other areas inside the DBI boundary (including the Riddings estate) have been completed and further consultation is due to start imminently.

Sheepridge Village Centre is the largest shopping area in the DBI area and existing shops include:

• Best-One Express Convinience Store & Post Office

• Cohen´s Chemists

• Gauk Rodgers Bakery and Sandwhich Shop

• Hair & Body 2000 Unisex Hairdressers

• Timmy´s Taxis

• Premier Express Convinience Store

• Sweet Spice Caribbean Cusine Takeaway

• Tony´s Chippy Takeaway (Fish & Chips)

The general appearance and environment has become very poor and previous consultation suggested people would like to see something radical carried out.

Ambitious plans have been looked at by the DBI Ltd Board and action is due to begin very soon.

DBI Ltd has purchased many of the run-down buildings along the Centre, including the old Co-op, the bookmakers as well as some of the residential properties.

The short term aim, subject to planning permission, is to knock these properties down and use the land to create a new car parking area for the rest of the shops.

This decision was taken due to some of buildings being structurally unsafe and it is hoped the new car park will relieve congestion along Sheepridge Road.
