In June 1999 DBI agreed to investigate a partnership arrangement with the private sector to remodel areas of difficult to let housing, develop land sites and carry out infrastructure improvements. Southdale Homes were selected as the preferred development partner in April 2001.
This partnership arrangement has resulted in the demolition of approximately 500 council houses and their replacement with a similar number of new build properties for sale. In addition, housing association properties have been built to meet the researched need for appropriate, local affordable housing.
To date, over 400 new properties for sale have been built and the final phase of new housing is being negotiated. Additionally, over 100 new housing association properties have been built, including larger family homes plus bungalows for older and disabled people.

New Starta Houses in Brackenhall
The DBI area still includes a large amount of housing that is available for rent. The majority of this housing is managed by Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) on behalf of the Council and is let using the Choice-Based lettings process (click here for more info).
In addition there are a number of Housing Associations who also have houses for rent in the area.
